Seeing Eyelet

There is something so demure and classic about an eyelet pattern.  Whether it is a skirt where the pattern covers the whole piece or a top with only eyelet trim, it adds detail that can make an otherwise simple piece of clothing special.  Warning - on the wrong piece of clothing it can look juvenile, so choose carefully! Eyelet is actually the pattern and typically is one where the holes make up only a small fraction of the fabric and are in isolated clusters.  It is a style of lace knitting where "holes" in the fabric are purposeful and purposefully arranged.

Alicia B. Designs posted about eyelet recently and highlighted some home-focused usage of the eyelet pattern. I particularly love the eyelet cake.  Amazing!

I have a navy eyelet skirt that I wish I had bought in a second color because I wear it regularly and love the style and length.  Since it is a solid color, it pairs with many things, but the eyelet patterns adds a nice texture and special detail that I love.  This season there seems to be a lot of eyelet on the market.... here are a few pieces that I found:

Calypso St. Barth Eyelet Pea Coat
J.Crew Eyelet Pencil Skirt
Eyelet Keds (disclaimer - I wouldn't say that I like these, but I felt that I had to include them. I haven't worn Keds since middle school. Are people really wearing them again?)
J. Renee Clutch (the fabric has an eyelet pattern in it in addition to the colorful floral print)
Tibi Eyelet Dress
J.Crew Schoolboy Blazer
Mod Cloth Buttoned Up Beauty Eyelet Skirt
Tory Burch Imogen Sleeveless Top
Marc by Marc Jacobs Edith Eyelet Dress

And for an example of what I mean about eyelet being too juvenile to wear, I think this bikini from Shoshanna sums it up. In my opinion, no woman over the age of 18 should be wearing this... okay, maybe through college, but, to me, this looks like lingerie, not a swimsuit. Anyone disagree? J.Crew has a similar swimsuit this season and I feel the same way about it.  I've offered some cute Cosabella lingerie as a point of comparison below.

Cosabella Eyelet Lingerie (please note that this is not that different from the swimsuits on either side of this photo, yet this is meant to be worn in the bedroom)
